Quiescent cells that have withdrawn from the cell cycle and do not proliferate. These cells, which are in the G0 phase of the cell cycle, are called also G0 cells, non-cycling cells, or resting cells.
Such cells are reversibly growth-arrested cells and can be induced to proliferate under certain conditions, for example, exposure to growth factors, cytokines, hormones, or chemical agents. Quiescent cells are different from cells that have undergone terminal differentiation, which is also associated with a definitive withdrawal from the cell cycle
