a term pertaining to one of several mechanisms causing cell death by apoptosis in nearby cells and involving a death receptor and its cognate ligand. The term has been used also for mechanisms involving direct communication between cells, for example, through gap junctions (Lin et al, 1998) (see also: bystander apoptosis).
Fratricide has been observed, for example in activated T-cells stimulated via the T-cell receptor complex (CD3) through the recognition of antigen presented by MHC molecules (Su et al, 1993).
