[full of fluid] fof is a zebrafish mutant described by Hogan et al (2009). This mutant lacks the thoracic duct and intersegmental and dorsal longitudinal lymphatic vessels, but retains an apparently normal blood vasculature. The mutated gene has been identified as CCBE1. In wild-type zebrafish, this protein is expressed spatially and temporally in the migration routes of lymphatic endothelial cells, but not in lymphatic endothelial cells themselves. CCBE1 acts at the same stage of development as VEGF-C and is indispensible for embryonic lymphangiogenesis (lymphangioblast budding and angiogenic sprouting from venous endothelium).
