[Formyl-Methionyl-Leucyl-Phenylalanine] (fMet-Leu-Phe). Abbr. also: fMLF. N-formylated peptides are believed to derive from bacterial protein degradation or from mitochondrial proteins upon tissue damage (see also: inflammation, wound healing).
fMLP is a strong chemoattractant (see also: Chemotaxis) and, among other things, induces adherence, degranulation and production of tissue-destructive oxygen-derived free radicals in phagocytic cells. Di- and tripeptides containing formylmethionine are strong attractants for both neutrophils and macrophages, whereas the corresponding nonacylated compounds are not
