Commonly used cell lines to study the biology of enterocytes are Caco-2 cells and HT-29 cells.
Enterocytes or enterocytic cells are terminally differentiated cells comprising the majority of the external surface of the small intestinal epithelium (for epithelial cells lining the colon see: colonocytes). These columnar epithelial cells are intestinal absorptive cells. They belong to one of several epithelial cell lineages in the gastrointestinal tract, which differ from each other in morphology and function (Wright, 2000). Unlike Goblet cells
