This poxvirus protein (Mousepox virus p13) functions as a decoy receptor for IL18 (hence also: Ectromelia virus IL18BP [Ectromelia virus IL18 binding protein] (or Mousepox virus IL18BP [Mousepox virus IL18 binding protein]. It binds IL18 with high affinity and inhibits IL18 activities in vitro (Born et al, 2000). The equivalent gene in vaccinia virus is C12L.
