This protein is encoded by an open reading frame in the genome of vaccinia virus [Vaccinia virus C12L protein]. It was identified in the conditioned medium of virus-infected cells by virtue of its ability to inhibits the production of IFN-gamma by murine splenocytes in response to treatment with IL12 (Symons et al, 2002). The equivalent gene is ectromelia virus is ectromelia poxvirus p13.
The C12L protein shows amino acid similarity to IL18 binding proteins that are encoded by poxviruses, mice and humans (see also: vIL18BP [viral IL18 binding protein]). C12L has been shown to inhibit the biological activity of
