This is a general term for erythrocytes with a size that is smaller than those of normal erythrocytes (Pribush et al, 1995) (see also: discocytes). A discrimination between normally and abnormally sized may be difficult (Haun et al, 2002).
Microcytes are observed under a variety of conditions, including various forms of anemia, iron deficiency, hemodialysis (Bessman et al, 1977; Lindenbaum and Roman, 1980; van Waveren Hogervorst et al, 1987; Bartels et al, 1990; d'Onofrio et al, 1992; Jiminez et al, 1995).
