[cysteine-rich domain]
abbr. CRD (a term with multiple meanings). As the name implies, the main characteristic of these protein domains is that they are rich in cysteine residues. These may be engaged in disulfide bonding. Such domains are found in a variety of factors and enzymes. Many of the proteins of the frizzled family contains such a conserved domain in their extracellular part which has been shown to be required for binding ligand (which are members of the Wnt family) (Bodmer et al, 2002; Pei and Grishin, 2012).
