This factor is released by Toxoplasma gondii. It is a potent stimulator of IL12 production by dendritic cells. The factor acts through one of the receptors for chemokines, CCR5 (Aliberti et al, 2003).
Cyclophilin-18 binds directly to human CCR5. MIP-1-beta and HIV1 R5 gp120 partially compete with this interaction. Cyclophilin-18 inhibits HIV1 cell fusion and infection with cell-free virus. Inhibition mediated by Cyclophilin-18 does not induce production of beta-Chemokines or cause CCR5 downmodulation (Golding et al, 2003).
