This term pertains to a very specific form of cell death that occurs in keratinocytes of the epidermis. The process is distinct in many ways from the classic pathways of cell death by apoptosis (Lippens et al, 2005). It results in the formation of the cornified layer, which consists of several layers of terminally differentiated, dead keratinocytes. Cornification is sometimes being referred to also as keratinization or cornified envelope formation (Candi et al, 2005; Lippens et al, 2005).
