This term has been proposed for a type of cell movement that is guided by purely physical interactions at the cell-substrate interface such as extracellular matrix or artificial substrates, with cells encountering a gradient in substrate stiffness or elasticity tending to crawl up the stiffness gradient (Lo et al, 2000; Plotnikov and Waterman, 2013). It is thought that changes in the physical forces associated with tissue rigidity and strain can control normal and pathological processes involving cell locomotion, including physiological processes such as morphogenesis, immune responses, and wound healing. Depending on the substrate, cells may also show the phenomenon of reverse durotaxis when migrating from the stiff to the soft regions of a substrate (Singh et al, 2014)
