a very general and collective term for different cell types found in the connective tissue, which is derived in the embryo from mesenchyme. Connective tissues consist of cells and extracellular material, the extracellular matrix, which is secreted by some of these cells. The extracellular matrix in connective tissues separates the cells from each other, which is in contrast to other basic tissues in which the cells are close together (e. g., epithelial cells, muscle cells, or neurons).
