This antimicrobial peptide belongs to the family of Brevinins. The term brevinin-1EMa has been given to gaegurin-5 (see: gaegurins) by Won et al (2009).
Peptide GA-K4 (FLKWLFKWAKKamide), derived from brevinin-1EMa, shows most potent antimicrobial activity. when tested against tumor cell lines such as A498 (kidney), A549 (lung), HCT116 (colon), MKN45 (stomach), PC-3 (prostate), SK-MEL-2 (skin) and SK-OV-3 (ovary), the peptide has activity as an anticancer peptide and synergises with doxorubicin (Kang et al, 2012).
