Brevinins constitute a family of antimicrobial peptides (24 amino acids) isolated originally from the skin of the Oriental frog, Rana brevipoda porsa. Many of these peptides are active against a wide range of Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria and against strains of pathogenic fungi. Nomenclature: Names often reflect the species of origin (capitalized letters) and the isotype (small letters).
Brevinin-1 (FLPVLAGIAAKVVPALFCKITKKC) has been isolated from the skin of the frog, Rana brevipoda porsa (Morikawa et al, 1992). Brevinin-1 is active against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
