the developmental stage of an embryo that follows the morula stage. Blastocysts have developed a cavity (called blastocoele). The outer cell layer is called the trophoblast and will later develop into the placenta. The inner cell mass (abbr. ICM), which is called also the embryoblast, will develop into the embryo. The inner cell mass contributes to the embryo proper, as well as to extraembryonic organs such as the yolk sac, allantois, and amnion (see also: Moore and Persaud, 1993).
When cells of the embryoblast begin to grow, they form a bilaminar disk. The layer closest to the blastocoele becomes the hypoblast. The layer above the hypoblast is now called
