this term refers to the stage during the preimplantation embryonic development of a fertilised egg when the developing embryo contained within the zona pellucida is composed of cell clusters containing more than 16 cells. This stage is followed by the blastocyst stage. Morula cells undergo the first cellular specialization and produce an outer rim of cells, the so-called trophoblast that surrounds an inner core of cells the inner cell mass. The term ES-like cells [embryonic stem cell-like cells] may refer to these cells.
