These cells constitute a bone marrow-derived cell type with fibroblast morphology that covers areas in long-term bone marrow cultures known as cobblestone areas, which are areas of hematopoiesis. In such cultures some cell types move underneath the blanket cells, where they become fixed (e. g., macrophages), whereas other cell types such as granulocytes migrate out of these hematopoietic islands covered by blanket cells (Tawassoli, 1989; Garland and Rudin, 1997).
