a histological term referring generally to cells that contain a single large or numerous small cytoplasmic vacuoles.
The term has been used for bizarre large eosinophilic cells observed in histological sections of patients with focal cortical dysplasia (Morioka et al, 1999; Cotter et al, 1999). Cotter et al (1999) have identified these cells as aberrant neuroglial cells.
Balloon cells are characteristic of various cortical malformations (focal cortical dysplasia, hemimegalencephaly, tuberous sclerosis). Fauser et al (2004) have reported that a subpopulation of these cells frequently express CD34
