ZEBRA

[BamHI Z Epstein-Barr replication activator] The Epstein-Barr virus gene ZEBRA has been identified by Grogan et al (1987). Expression of this gene in human lymphoblastoid cells activates a switch causing the virus to shift from the latent to the replicative phase of its life cycle. ZEBRA is encoded by the BZLF1 and is known also as Zta.

ZEBRA functions, at least in part, as the viral homolog of the cellular Fos transcription factor. ZEBRA binds to AP-1-like sequences termed ZEBRA response elements (Farrell et al, 1989; Flemington and Speck, 1990; Lieberman et al, 1990).
