[extraembryonic endoderm stem cells] This cell type has been isolated from mouse blastocysts (Kunath et al, 2005). They contribute efficiently to parietal endoderm in vivo, but do not efficiently integrate into the visceral endoderm and, therefore, do not represent the first committed step of the extraembryonic endoderm. Xen cells do not express the transcription factor OCT4 (Kunath et al, 2005) that is found in all cells of the early inner cell mass of an embryo (Ovitt and Schöler, 1998).
