abbr. for Xenopus laevis tissue culture. A cell line with fibroblast morphology established from tissues of Xenopus laevis. Xenopus laevis cell lines have been used for a variety of studies in cell biology and molecular biology, one of their major advantages being their ability to growth at room temperature, usually without the need for a 5 % CO2 atmosphere.
Several Xenopus laevis cell lines have been used intensively for transfection studies, involving the transfer of cytokine or cytokine receptor genes, and as a source of cytokines functioning as mesoderm inducing factors.
