This secreted protein has been identified by Wu and Smas (2008). It is an adipokine secreted by adipocytes. Wdnm1-like transcripts are enriched approximately 500-fold in white adipose tissues versus brown adipose tissues. Expression of the protein has been shown to enhance the activity of matrix metalloproteinase MMP-2. The authors have suggested that Wdnm1-like may be involved in remodeling of the extracellular milieu in adipogenesis and may play a role also in tumor microenvironments where adipocytes are key stromal components.
