[worm AIF homolog 1] The gene encoding this Caenorhabditis elegans protein is a worm ortholog of the apoptosis inducing factor AIFM1 [apoptosis inducing factor mitochondrion associated 1] (PDCD8; mutated in Harlequin mice), a human mitochondrial oxidoreductase that is released from mitochondria and induces chromosome condensation and fragmentation during cell death by apoptosis.
