This is a collective term for a family of peptide factors generated by proteolytic processing of vasoinhibins are a family of peptides derived from prolactin (16K Prolactin, termed also vasoinhibin), growth hormone and placental lactogen.
Vasoinhibins possess potent antiangiogenic, vasoconstrictive, and antivasopermeability activities (Clapp et al, 2006, 2008). Ocular vasoinhibins act directly on endothelial cells to block blood vessel growth, dilation, and to promote vascular regression mediated by apoptosis. Vasoinhibins also prevent retinal angiogenesis
