abbr. VV-N1L protein. This protein of 14 kDa is encoded in the genome of Vaccinia virus and is being referred to also as Poxvirus N1L protein and more often Vaccinia virus N1 protein. The protein is a strong virulence factor, the deletion of which attenuates virulence and reduces mortality of intracranially infected mice by a factor of 104 (Kotwal and Moss, 1988). Billings B et al (2004) have reported thast the lack of N1L gene expression results in a significant decrease of vaccinia virus replication in mouse brain.
The protein was described originally as a secreted virokine found in the conditioned medium of virus-infected cells but is believed now to be predominantly an intracellular protein (Bartlett et al, 2002).
