[very late activation antigen 6] Very late activation antigens are a family of heterodimeric transmembrane proteins that belong to the integrin family of cell adhesion molecules (Hynes, 1987; Ruoslahti, 1991). These antigens consist of a distinct alpha subunit non-covalently linked to a common beta subunit. Their name refers to the observation that beta-chains increase in amount and additional alpha-subunits appear after long-term T-cell activation (Hemler et al, 1987).
VLA-6 is a heterodimeric protein complex identified on platelets. It consists of a distinct integrin-alpha-6 subunit and the integrin-beta-1 subunit that is also a constituent of other members of the family of VLA proteins (Hemler et al, 1988). Based on its identity with
