[VEGF-A183] [Vascular endothelial growth factor-183] a splice variant of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) expressed in human astrocytes (Müller cells) (Jingjing et al, 1999). VEGF-183 is predominantly a cell-anchored protein that promotes increased vascular permeability in vivo. It requires extracellular cleavage or release (ectodomain shedding) by heparin or plasmin to promote its mitogenic activity in vitro (Jingjing et al, 2001).
