[vascular cellular adhesion molecule 1; vascular cell adhesion protein 1] VCAM-1 has been identified and cloned as a previously undescribed adhesion molecule the expression of which is induced by cytokines on human endothelial cells (Osborn et al, 1989). The protein mediates binding lymphocytes. VCAM-1 mRNA is present in endothelial cells at 2 hr after treatment with IL1 or TNF-alpha and is maintained for at least 72 hr; leukocyte binding activity parallels mRNA induction.
