[Vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein] VASP has been identified as a protein that is phosphorylated in human platelets treated with platelet inhibitors elevating cAMP or cGMP levels (Waldmann et al, 1986, 1987). The protein is expressed, however, in a wide range of cell types, including lymphocytes, granulocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, trophoblasts.
The gene encoding VASP protein (380 amino acids) has been cloned by Haffner et al (1995) and Zimmer et al (1996). human and mouse VASP are 89 % identical at the amino acid level.
