[vascular apoptosis-inducing protein-1] Also abbr. VAP. This basic protein has been identified in Crotalus atrox hemorrhagic snake venom together with a related protein, VAP2 (Masuda et al, 1998; Masuda et al, 1997). The protein induces cell death by apoptosis in endothelial cells (Masuda et al, 1997). VAP1 cDNA has been cloned by Masuda et al (2000). It encodes a protein with 610 amino acids. VAP1 belongs to the metalloprotease/disintegrin family of proteins and contains a proprotein domain, a metalloprotease domain, a disintegrin-like domain, and a cysteine-rich domain. VAP1 has Zn(2+)-dependent
