symbol: snk. Snake, encoded by gene CG7996, is a secreted serine protease required for the establishment of the dorsal-ventral axis during the embryonic development of Drosophila (DeLotto and Spierer, 1986).
LeMosy et al (2001) have shown that the zymogen form of snake is activated by another protease, Gastrulation-defective, which in turn activates protease Easter exclusively on the ventral side of the embryo. Activated Easter then processes Spätzle into the activating ligand for the Toll receptor.
