a gene in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus that encodes a member of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) gene superfamily. The cDNA sequence predicts a protein of 383 amino acids with 7 cysteine residues (Stenzel et al, 1994) with similarities to Afuni from the brittle star Amphiura filiformis. Range et al (2007) have reported that Univin is the sea urchin ortholog of Xenopus laevis Vg-1. Univin is more closely related to Vg-1, Dvr1 from zebrafish, and to GDF1 [growth/differentiation factor-1] and GDF3 from mouse, than to bone morphogenetic proteins.
