This extracellular matrix protein has been identified by Schuppan et al (1990), who have reported that undulin is found mainly between densely packed mature collagen fibrils. The protein may have a function in the supramolecular organization of collagen fibrils in soft tissues.
Trueb and Trueb (1992) have isolated undulin from chicken embryos, suggesting that it represents chicken collagen type 14. The identity of undulin and collagen type 14 has been demonstrated by Bauer et al (1997).
