This transcript is encoded by human cytomegalovirus and expressed during the latent infection of hematopoietic cells. The transcript encodes a putative protein of 139 amino acids with homology to IL10 and to viral IL10 that is expressed during productive viral infection (see: CMV IL10). Expression of the latency-associated protein that may act like IL10 may allow the virus to avoid immune recognition and clearance during the latent phase of infection.
