[HHV-6 U12; Herpesvirus 6 U12 protein] This is a herpesvirus homolog of a cellular G-protein-coupled receptor. This protein is encoded by an open reading frame (orf) of the U12 gene in human herpesvirus HHV-6. A related gene (M33) is encoded in the genome of murine cytomegalovirus, and HHV-7 also contains a similar U12 gene (Davis-Poynter et al, 1997).

HHV-6 is divided into two subgroups, termed HHV-6A and HHV-6B, on the basis of reactivity with monoclonal antibodies and HHV-6-specific T-cell clones, and restriction enzyme cleavage patterns (Ablashi et al, 1991; Schirmer et al, 1991; Yasukawa et al, 1993).
