Transin (alternative designation Transin-1) is a neutral metalloproteinase first identified in transformed rat fibroblasts (Matrisian et al, 1986). Nicholson et al (1989) have reported that transin degrades several components of the extracellular matrix, including collagen type 3, collagen type 4, collagen type 5, fibronectin, and gelatins formed from several denatured collagen types. The enzyme also activates the proform of collagenase-1.
Transin is expressed highly in malignant rather than benign animal tumors and appears to play a role in tumor progression (Matrisian et al, 1986; Matrisian and Bowden, 1990). Transin is overexpressed in metastatic tumor cell lines
