The name Toso is derived from a liquor drunk on New Year's day in Japan to celebrate long life and eternal youth. The protein is referred to also as Regulator of FAS induced Apoptosis. The approved gene symbol is FAIM3 [FAS apoptotic inhibitory molecule 3].
This gene was identified by virtue of its ability to block apoptosis mediated by the FAS antigen (APO-1) (Hitoshi et al, 1998). The Toso cDNA encodes a type 1 integral membrane protein of 390 amino acids. Expression of Toso appears to be restricted to lymphoid cells and becomes elevated after cell activation of T-cells. Toso can inhibit T-cell
