Thrombin is known also as coagulation factor-2 or factor-2, or factor IIa. Thrombin is a multifunctional highly specific serine protease known mainly for its activity as a blood coagulation factor. The activation of thrombin is the last step in the coagulation cascade, cleaving fibrinogen to form fibrin. Thrombin also activates factor V, factor VIII, factor XIII. It also causes cell activation of platelets and acts as a vasoconstrictor protein. For fragments derived from thrombin that have antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities see also: TCP [thrombin-derived C-terminal peptides].
