This poorly characterised factor (larger than 30 kDa) is found in the conditioned medium of murine testicular and ovarian somatic cells but not in the conditioned medium of cells derived from animals carrying the ter mutation (teratoma, chromosome 18), which is known to cause a deficiency of primordial germ cells. Absence of this factor appears to cause apoptosis of primordial germ cells while its presences supports survival of these cells.
