[target of antiproliferative antibody 1] Oren et al (1990) have isolated the cDNA coding for human TAPA-1. The human and murine gene show a high level of homology (Andria et al, 1991).
TAPA-1 is an integral membrane protein of 26 kDa expressed on many human cell types. Antibodies against TAPA-1 induce homotypic aggregation of cells and inhibits their growth. In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD81 (Engel and Tedder, 1994).
