[tumor-associated calcium signal transducer 1] This designation is based on the capability of the protein to stimulate cytoplasmic calcium levels in human cancer cells upon activation by cognate antibodies (Ripani et al, 1998).
The protein encoded by this gene has been identified originally as a carcinoma-associated cell surface glycoprotein (Ross et al, 1986). The corresponding gene has been called TROP1, based on the presence of the antigen in normal trophoblast cells (Fornaro et al, 1995).
In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD326.
