This is a term used by histologists referring frequently to cells, usually lymphocytes, that have become ruptured or fragmented during the preparation of peripheral blood smear slides.
The percentage of smudge cells described in lymphocytic leukaemia shows great interpatient variability and appears to be independent of the absolute lymphocyte count and the staining method employed (Heinivaara, 1959). In the hea mouse (hereditary erythroblastic anemia) blood smears are abnormal with elevated numbers of smudge cells (White et al, 2004).
