These cells, called also normoblasts, are morphologically identified precursors of erythrocytes. The cells still contain a nucleus, in contrast to mature red blood cells, which contain Howell Jolly bodies, remnants of a nucleus.
Proerythroblasts (called also pronormoblasts) develop into a form with a basophilic cytoplasm due to the presence of ribosomes (called basophilic erythroblasts). Further development yields smaller cells that begins to produce hemoglobin. These cells are called polychromatophilic erythroblasts as they can be stained with basic and eosin stains.
