[Sciatic nerve neurotrophic factor] This biochemically uncharacterized activity is found in conditioned medium of cultured rat sciatic nerves. The activity induces neuronal differentiation and neurite outgrowth on PC12 cells and promotes survival and differentiation of eight-day old chick embryo dorsal root ganglion and ciliary ganglion neurons (see also: neurotrophic factors).

The activity is not inhibited by antibodies directed against NGF or bFGF and is not mimicked by CNTF, laminin or fibronectin.
