[SMM-Chemokines]
An acronym from 'synthetically and modularly modified'. This term has been coined by Liu et al (2007) for unnatural designer chemokines (see also: muteins) with improved bioactivities.
Liu et al have constructed one of such chemokines on the basis of viral MIP-2 that contains D-amino acids. This synthetic molecule shows enhanced affinity for its receptor CXCR4, but significantly diminished affinity for the receptors CCR5 and CCR2, which are known to bind wild-type viral MIP-2. The synthetic chemokine has been shown to be more potent and specific than natural chemokines in inhibiting HIV1 entry via CXCR4.
