[secreted apoptosis-related protein] SARP is an activity found in the conditioned medium of quiescent mouse embryonic C3H/10T1/2, which are more resistant to stimuli causing cell death by apoptosis than cells growing exponentially. These cells die when they are treated with inhibitors of RNA or protein synthesis but are resistant to such agents when when exponentially. The gene for SARP-1 [secreted apoptosis-related protein-1] has been isolated by differential display techniques. It is expressed in quiescent cells but not during exponential growth.
