called also retinal pigmented cells. Abbr. RPE cells. These cells are polarized epithelial cells found in the retina and recognized by their pigmentation (melanosomes). The retinal pigment epithelium consists of a single cell layer adjacent to the rod cells and cone photoreceptors and blood vessels of the choroid. The basal surface of these cells rests on a complex extracellular matrix known as Bruch's membrane. This epithelium develops from multipotent cells
