[regulator of G-protein signaling 5] This protein is involved in the regulation of heterotrimeric G-protein-coupled receptors and acts as an inhibitor of Galpha(q) and Galpha(i) activation (Zhou et al, 2001). This signal transduction protein is a member of a protein family of similar regulators and shows structural homology to SST2 of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and EGL-10 of Caenorhabditis elegans. Members of the RGS family are characterized by the presence of an RGS domain.
The human gene (Seki et al, 1998) is expressed abundantly in many different tissues (Seki et al, 1998). A differentially expressed short splice variant has been described by Liang et al (2005).
