RGS domain

[RGS domains]

[Regulator of G-protein Signaling domain] This domain of approximately 120 amino acids has been found in over 30 proteins in humans. RGS domains stabilize the transition intermediate of the GTP binding pocket of the alpha subunit of heterotrimeric G-proteins in an allosteric manner, accelerating the intrinsic GTPase activity of the alpha subunit. Proteins encoding RGS domains modulate signaling events of a number of seven transmenbrane receptors that utilise heterotrimeric G-proteins for signaling since they control the time of transmission of the respective agonists (Tesmer et al, 1997; Hollinger S and Hepler, 2002; Wieland and Mittmann, 2003).
